Lot Numbers, Retention Samples, and Chain of Custody
Traceability is the least glamorous element of research material quality and among the most important. It is what allows a result to be re-examined after the fact.
What a lot is
A lot, or batch, is material produced in a single defined production run under one set of conditions. Because synthesis, purification, and lyophilisation involve many variables, two lots of the same sequence are not assumed to be identical until documented as such. This is why analytical certificates are issued per lot rather than per product.
Retention samples
Disciplined producers set aside a portion of each lot as a retention sample, stored under controlled conditions for a defined period. If a question arises later — an anomalous result, a stability query, a documentation request — the original material can be re-tested rather than reconstructed from memory. Retention samples turn a claim into something falsifiable.
Chain of custody
Chain of custody is the documented record of who held the material, under what conditions, at each stage from raw amino acids through synthesis, purification, testing, filling, and shipment. Gaps in that chain are where handling conditions become unverifiable. Distributed supply chains with anonymous intermediate steps are difficult to audit for exactly this reason.
Practical implication
For a researcher, the practical test is simple: cite the lot number in your records, and confirm the supplier can produce the matching certificate and, if needed, re-test retained material. Traceability that only exists in marketing copy will not survive that request.
